The Coast

The Coast
n. 26/2009 -

The coast of the Medio Campidano remains one of the most appealing shores in Sardinia. Marked off to the south by the granite promontory of Capo Pecora and to the north by the basalt plateau of Capo Frasca, the coast (entirely falling in the territory of Arbus) stretches far about 50 km, alternating stretches of golden beaches with rocky areas. In its southern portion the beach of Scivu Piscinas stretches far 9 km and has a depth of 30-40 m; to its rear are imposing sand dunes, some as high as 50 m which stretch back into the hinterland in part covered by Mediterranean scrub vegetation of lentisk, mock privet, helichrysum and lavender; in this area, visitors can often spy Sardinian deers. This dune system is considered the most extensive in Europe and has been declared a world heritage site by UNESCO. Midway up the coastline, the shore is strung with a sequence of small bays and white and dark brown cliffs. Scattered outcrops of rock emerge from the sea a short distance from the shores highlighting the transparency of the water, which teems with fish. This is the famous Costa Verde, crossed by a long coastal road. Beach services and tourist resorts can be found at Portu Maga, Gutturu 'e Flumini, Funtanazza and Torre dei Corsari. To the north of the Spanish tower of Flumentargiu the shore becomes sandy again, with the long beach of Is Arenas Pistis stretching back into the hinterland far 2 km, creating splendid dunes rich in sand and bush vegetation, with some fine examples of cade juniper. The northern most portion of the coast belonging to the Province consists of a basalt plateau: the headland of Capo Frasca which is off limits since it is a militaryzone. The coast slopes down towards the south, flanking the wetlands of Marceddì and San Giovanni, known far their excellent fishing and frequented by many species of wading birds.
