The novel way - Cultural Park ‘Giuseppe Dessì’

View of the wash-house

  • LocalityVillacidro
  • Route type: on foot
  • Travelling time: one day
  • Point of departure: piazza Lavatoio (wash-house square) (Villacidro)

Walking down the streets of the old centre of Villacidro is somewhat like browsing the pages of novels such as Paese d’ombre, Il disertore, San Silvano. It is a fascinating and unique way to discover the most evocative corners of the small town, to seize its intrinsic meaning, coupled with its human and literary value, by entering right into the atmospheres of the novels.
Now as in the past, the wash-house square is the symbol of the novel Paese d'ombre and of Villacidro itself, being the meeting place at the heart of the small town. Therefore, it is also an ideal point of departure where various literary routes may start, through monuments and views of the old centre, to find out unforgettable settings pregnant of fictional worth and reminiscences of true life at the same time.

The wash-house, the Museum of the Novel hosted inside the ‘Cadoni’ Mill, the parish church of Santa Barbara, the Oratory of Our Lady of the Rosary, the ancient Cereal Bank, piazza Cadoni, via Roma and its 19th-century, upper-class small palaces, Casa Dessì, the Town Hall, the Baron’s Castle (now Bishop’s Seminary), the ancient quarters, Sa Spendula waterfall and the thick greenery surrounding the inhabited centre recreate the atmosphere of times past.
