The Province of Middle Campidano counts a number of painting and sculpture works, mainly associated to sacred art, which were formerly kept inside the main parish churches of the village. Many churches still possess their characteristic 16th-century retables; placed behind the altar, they were meant to indicate to the faithful the focus of ecclesiastical programmes. There are also several 17thcentury wooden sculptures, decorated with the typical technique of the Estofado de Oro, whose effect is that of a refined sumptuousness. Also, the churches of this province are enriched by polychrome marbles, wooden pulpits, marble altars and Baroque frescoes, creating a strongly evocative religious atmosphere. Moreover, there are several frescoes in private structures and mining buildings, such as the valuable Art-Nouveau decorations of the Directorate Palace in Montevecchio, styled as upper-class European houses of late 19thcentury, as well as frescoes embellishing the halls of Directorate Palace in Ingurtosu and the Bishop’s Palace in Villacidro.
Yet, painting and sculpture production is not an exclusivity of the past: indeed, there are lots of artists and sculptors in all the centres of the province who still create valuable works, fostering a widespread artistic and cultural enthusiasm
