The small palace of mining directorate

The Blue Hall inside the directorate palace in Montevecchio

The building hosting the directorate of Montevecchio (Borgo Montevecchio – Guspini) is located in the main square of the borough. Completed in 1877, it hosted the most important offices of the company, including the director’s house and servants’ quarters. Built in neo-Renaissance style, it is structured onto three storeys and includes an internal yard, totally decorated with frescoes.
Partly in-built to the edifice (apse and transept), the church of Santa Barbara is a small Latin-cross chapel, initially meant for private use by the mine owner’s family.
The small palace is rich in Art-Nouveau frescoes. Particularly interesting are the decorations of the Blue Hall, a wide room with pavilion vault, entirely frescoed with floral motifs, feminine figures and birds.
The palace, richly furnished, is a magnificent instance of upper-class mansion of 1800 and is available to visitors with a guided service.
The first floor, on the contrary, hosts the Historical Archive of Montevecchio Mine, currently involved in a reorganization stage, guarding a unique documentary heritage regarding the history of mining activity.
