The Giara of Gesturi

View of the Giara plateau and the inhabited centre of Gesturi

  • Locality: Giara of Gesturi (Gesturi, Genuri, Tuili e Setzu)
  • Route type: by car/on foot
  • Travelling time: one or more days

The beauty of the Giara can be enjoyed in many ways. To make the most of an exploration on it and catch its best aspects, the ideal way is walking upon the highlands to discover their landscapes, blooming meadows and numerous faunal and floral species, either endemic or rare.

Any route and departure point to discover the Giara will ensure an exciting and surprising journey.
Indeed, this is a most interesting place for geology and archaeology enthusiasts, as it reserves amazing views to good walkers: ‘domus de Janas’, giants’ tombs and a number of nuraghi, rising in the most panoramic and picturesque points, proposing wide-ranging bird’s-eye views over the plains below.
Walking should be compensated for by a stopover at the botanical garden of Morisia, displaying lots of flowerbeds, each containing a single species, offering a comprehensive group of local species. Enthusiasts will even find a good 12 species of orchids, including the Morisia manatha, after which the botanical garden was named.
There are also equipped areas available for a rest or a snack, organized by the municipalities comprised within the area: Gesturi, Genoni, Tuili and Setzu.

In proximity to the numerous marshes and picturesque ponds, surrounded by broad thickets of cork oaks and ilexes, one may come across the mysterious small horses of the Giara, which inhabit the highland (about 500 individuals) in small herds, living into the thick vegetation.
Moreover, the area has always been frequented by breeders, who have created small settlements and sheepfolds. Such structures are still present, although dismissed, in a few different types: the most typical ones are called pinnettas. These shepherds’ huts also allow to taste snacks based on local products.

An excursion on the Giara must include a visit to the inhabited centres at its foothills, which have conserved some significant evidence in their old historical centres and small churches, as well as a few works linked to a past of many events, with a strong farming and pastoral tradition.

As an alternative, you might want to go on towards the hills of Marmilla and its broad plains. In spring, scents and colours of blooming flowers appear in the intense red of poppies or in the yellow and white of daisies; in November, these shades are replaced by the delicate purple of saffron flowers and by the golden wheat of early summer. Every season has got its own palette of colours and flavours enhancing its splendour.
