Along miners’ tracks

The course of the stream Rio Piscinas, with its characteristic rusty red colour

  • Locality: Montevecchio (Guspini-Arbus) - Piscinas (Arbus)
  • Route type: excursion on foot
  • Point of departure: path CAI 191, starting from the dirt road leading from Montevecchio to Crocorigas
  • Travelling time: 4 hours (outward journey)
  • Difficulty level: medium

From the borough of Montevecchio, a well-indicated route leads to the area of Crocorigas. The stream called Rio Ruggeri flows inside an ilex grove and its course is frequently crossed by confluences to be waded. Its waters are multi-coloured: from milky white to rusty red, resulting from mining process waste products, formerly discharged from sites upstream.

Vegetal species of the woodlands include exemplars of Juniperus oxycedrus and Phoenicean juniper. The varied route keeps on showing many wonders, up to the extensive dunes of Piscinas, where the stream Ruggeri becomes Rio Piscinas. Here wilderness reigns supreme, offering amazing and picturesque landscapes. Through the dunes, among sea daffodils and rock samphires, one can reach the wonderful broad beach of Piscinas.
