San Gavino Monreale, the foundry

San Gavino foundry

The foundry (San Gavino Monreale) was built during last century’s early Thirties. It was raised near the old private railway, built by the Montevecchio company in order to transport minerals to San Gavino and, from there, to the port of Cagliari.
The facility started its activities in 1932 and soon became the major plant in Italy, producing 20,000 tons of material per year. Conceived to integrate and complete mining activities, it was shut down along with the closing of mines.
