The lake on river Leni (Villacidro)

Aerial view of the lake along Rio Leni

The artificial lake is named after one of the major watercourses flowing into it, i.e. the stream Leni. The lake is comprised in the territory of Villacidro and represents one of the main basins of Middle Campidano. Created following the construction of the dam of Leni, it is characterized by a considerable size (its basin surface covers about 74 sq Km, for a capacity of 20 million m3), but also by a special building technique: this is the second artificial basin in Europe (coming after another one in Basilicata) whose dam has been exclusively made in packed earth, with alluvional material directly taken from adjacent areas.
The lake has been perfectly inserted in the surrounding environment and is now suitable for lots of sports. Indeed, many fishing contest are organized there, besides a Triathlon show of international importance, taking place in June every year.
