Sardara churches

Church of Sant'Anastasia

In the old centre of Sardara is the parish church of Sant’Antonio, built in the second half of the 17th century, guarding a wooden polychrome altar of early 1700. On top of the village rises the parish church of the Holy Virgin of the Assumption, patroness of the village, built at the beginning of 1600 upon a previous Romanesque edifice. Inside is a wooden statue of Saint Bartolommeo, of about 1669; two wooden busts of Saints Peter and Paul; an organ of 1700 and a Retable with a wooden altar of the Madonna d’Itria, of the 17th century. The church of San Gregorio, dating from end of 13th -beginning of 14th century, in Romanesque and Gothic style, consists of a single nave and contains a wooden statue of San Gregorio, in addition to a mysterious inscription on the wall. Outside the village, in the area of the Roman baths, is the church of Santa Maria de is acquas, probably built upon some pre-existing Christian structures, now hosting the Diocese Shrine and standing as a stepping stone of pilgrimage in the period of celebrations dedicated to the ancient cult of the Virgin.
