Gesturi churches

The rural shrine of Madonna d’Itria

The numerous sacred buildings of Gesturi date back to an historical time span from 1400 to 1600. Romanesque and Gothic are the prevailing styles. The oldest church is that of Santa Barbara, built in the first half of 1400 in Romanesque-Gothic style. The parish church of Madonna dell’Assunta dates back to the early 1600; dedicated to Saint Teresa of Avila, patron Saint of the village, it is entirely Gothic. The church of Santa Maria Egiziaca, or of the Holy Sepulchre, built between 1500 and 1600 in late-Gothic and Renaissance style, is well-known as it is the seat of the ancient Brotherhood of the Sepulchre. Still dating from 1600 is the church of San Sebastiano, hosting a statue of the Virgin bearing the inscription ‘Nuestra Señora del Rosario’. Just outside the village, sunk in vegetation, is the rural shrine of Madonna d’Itria.
