Sardara, Castle of Monreale

Sunset on the background of Monreale Castle

The castle, with the annexed fortified borough, was raised at the beginning of the 14th century upon the vestiges of an ancient Nuragic settlement. The edifice represented the most imposing stronghold of the Kingdom of Arborea as it was the residence of the sovereigns. Moreover, it was also a warehouse for food provisions and a military and strategic base. The castle is unique of its kind, as it is the only one to have eight towers in addition to the keep and the original rampart, which has been preserved almost intact. The rampart encircles the medieval borough, which is still making the object of excavation works.
