In Middle Campidano, lots of churches are sunk in the greenery of the most picturesque sites of the territory, enclosed by woodlands of olive trees and ilexes. They reflect an agro-pastoral civilization that used to associate daily activities to manifestations of faith.
The sacred buildings of these ancient shrines are often located in remote areas; even though their size is often modest, their special artistic value and significance should be appreciated within their historical and religious context.

Today, these sacred places come back to life on the occasion of celebrations in the honour of their Saints, when tourists and faithful fill the air with music and traditional dances, voices, colours and scents of the feasts.
Among them are the church of Santa Maria de is acquas in Sardara, in proximity of the thermae; Santa Severa in Gonnosfanadiga; the rural shrine of Santa Marina in Villanovaforru; the shrine of Madonna d’Itria in Gesturi; the church of San Sisinnio, immersed in a woodland of millenary olive trees, and the small church of San Giuseppe, in the cherry trees valley of Villascema, in Villacidro, and many more.
