The Castles

Medio Campidano - The Castles
n. 26/2009 -

The Medio Campidano, the ancient borderland between the Giudicati (kingdoms) of Arborea and Cagliari, is dotted with the remains of an ancient defence system consisting of strategic strongholds, linked in equal parts to military life and to the life of the villages that grew up at their feet. Unlike the coastal fortifications, their purpose was not to fend off external invaders, but rather to manage the strife between the island's rival realms. Thus it was that to mark the borders between the Giudicati of Arborea and Cagliari, the castles of Monreale (Sardara) and Las Plassas were built in the early years of the 11th century: today, only their ruins remain, a top the hills overlooking the Campidano and the Marmilla. The castle of Sanluri was built in 1355 on the north-western border of the Giudicato of Cagliari, at that time a holding of the crown of Aragon. It is the only one of the more than eighty built in Sardinia which has survived intact, and today hosts an important museum of the Italian Risorgimento.
